Stair tread covers – As a path from one level of one home to another, stairs are high-traffic zones. As stairs are used often, over time, treads or the upper part of the staircase that is stepped on often becomes worn. If your staircase shows signs of wear and tear, instead of replacing them completely, top them with fake treads. False stairway treads act as a cover for existing stairway treads and give a staircase an updated look without the hassle of removing and replacing existing treads.

Sand surface of existing stairway treads with medium-grain sandpaper. Grinding treads will remove any finish and offer a larger band between existing treads and fake treads. Vacuum stairs to remove any dust and dirt. Wipe down treads with a damp cloth to further remove any excess dust and dirt.

Apply wood glue on the back of a fake stairway tread. Apply glue around the edge of the fake tread and along the center in a wavy line. Place false steps in place over the existing tread. Touch the top of the fake tread to create a bond between treads and glue. Hammer finishing seam along the edge and back of fake stairway tread to drive them into the existing stairway tread.
