Stair height is measured at the top of the stair rail grip, which can vary in thickness. Type I rails with circular profiles need an outer diameter of 1.25-2 inches. If they are not round, their circumference must be 4-6.25 inches, with a maximum cross section of 2.25 inches. Edges must have a radius of at least 0.01 inches. Type II rails larger than 6.25 inches need a recessed area for finger grip. The recess must begin within 0.75 inches from the top of the profile and continue at least 1.75 inches below the highest profile. Edges must also have a radius of at least 0.01 inches.
